YMCA of Greater Indianapolis Presents MK Shannon Awards

The YMCA of Greater Indialanapolis has once again presented an award designed by MK Shannon. The name of the award is Family Circle. Since 2010, the YMCA of Greater Indialanapolis has used Family Circle as their Lifetime Achievement award. This award is often used to honor dedicated employees, volunteers, people who have devoted much of their time to the organization, or made significant accomplishments. MK Shannon Awards will customize the piece with a unique marble base engraved with the recipient's name, organization, and date. Since Family Circle represents a family unit, it has also over the years been purchased by family after family to represent themselves. These make wonderful gifts for milestone birthdays and special anniversaries.

Since I first carved Family Circle and saw it cast in pewter,” says MK, “I still enjoy hearing about how the award will be given and stories about the people who receive it.”

Cast in pewter, Family Circle is available with a brushed pewter finish, or silver or gold plating. Family Circle stands 12” tall including the marble base.

GALA Award 2014 Nominees Announced by Special Events Magazine

The granddaddy of awards honors great special events from around the world.
The Special Events Advisory Board announced the nominees for this year's GALA Awards, the most prestigious award in the special events industry. The awards, which honor work from throughout the world, have been handed out since 1986. The GALA Awards will be presented at a black-tie event at The Special Event 2014 in Nashville, TN. Revelation—The Road to the 2014 GALA Awards was the theme for 2014. The GALA Awards are dedicated to those that dared to dream, who seized hold of their revelation and let the idea bloom all the way to success.

Special Events Magazine cover with GALA Award by MK Shannon Awards
The editor for The Special Events Magazine contacted MK Shannon in 1999 to create the GALA Award for The Special Events for their annual conference. Both the program director and magazine editor worked with MK to select the design. The award was designed to represent individuals within the membership who strive to perform and create at the highest level. These individuals compete yearly to earn the GALA Award for their particular category. The sculpture for the award has four figures to represent teamwork. No extraordinary event or project can be completed by one individual, it takes people working together. A spiral base leads into the four figures causing them to rise upward forming a globe-like shape that ends with the arms of the figures holding a star. The star represents the highest level of achievement.

Thirty five different categories were awarded this year at the GALA Awards in Nashville.

General Electric Aviation Custom Award by MKShannon

This custom award project involved the reproduction of a portion of a GE jet engine blade whose unique and innovative design is displayed at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. There is only one word to describe the elegance of this “blade”-- gorgeous! It was a joy for MK Shannon to recreate and experience this exquisite piece of work. The pewter blade is about a foot tall and very dynamic. A black patina was used to create a contrast that allows the beauty of the blade to exhibit itself sharply.

It took several weeks to complete the model. The base of the award was also designed by GE Aviation and then executed by MK Shannon Awards following specific directions provided by GE. The name plate is imprinted on clear Lucite and raised off the marble base with small aluminum standoffs to make it stand out.

GE Blade
As an award for engineers it is pretty extraordinary. The GE Blade is presented at GE's Annual Leadership Meeting.

This will be the first year these awards have been presented in Canada. They have been presented in the United States for several years. The design is a more modern version of the previous logo of a hot air balloon. MK Shannon Awards provided the new awards after creating them in pewter. Children’s Miracle Network Awards, U.S. provided the artwork and MK Shannon created the piece in pewter for use by Children’s Miracle Network.

TD Bank Group received the 2013 award. Shown below are:

Children's Miracle Network Canada 2013 Award Recipient

Children's Miracle Network Hospitals is celebrating its 30-year anniversary! Since 1983, the organization has raised more than $4.7 billion—most of it $1 at a time—for 170 children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada, which, in turn, use the money where it’s needed the most. These donations have gone to support research and training, purchase equipment, and pay for uncompensated care, all in support of the mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible.

You have probably given at Costco or some other retail store where your name has been placed on the “balloon” and posted for all to see. Please join us in supporting the efforts of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals by visiting their website http://childrensmiraclenetwork.ca/

Out & Equal Workplace Advocates Announced 2013 Outie Award Winners of Custom Awards Designed by MK Shannon Awards

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—November 4, 2013 Five silver ‘Outie’ statuettes were bestowed upon Outie Award winners while 2,200 attendees from around the world gathered at the 15th annual Out & Equal Workplace Summit in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Summit is the leading LGBT professional development conference, equipping attendees with the tools, resources and connections to create equitable and inclusive workplaces for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people.
The 2013 winners were Target, Lockheed Martin, The Dow Chemical Company, Cathy Bessant from Bank of America, and Kevin Jones. The winners were chosen from a competitive slate of nominees and voted on by an independent panel of experts from companies and nonprofits that set the standard for LGBT workplace equality.
The annual Outie Awards honor individuals and companies for their leadership in creating workplace cultures of inclusion and equity for the LGBT community.
Artist and designer of the Outie Award, MK Shannon, describes her sculpture as a single 11 inch figure that appears to run in a forward motion with the body stretched upward. The figure is reaching far above to hold an “exclamation point" as high as it can reach. The exclamation point is a symbol for Out & Equal. It is held by the figure like a torch, bringing light, truth and hope for equality for all people everywhere.

Children's Miracle Network Hospitals "Excellence Award" by MK Shannon Awards

MK Shannon Awards and Rewards specializes in the reproduction of awards that are crafted using a company's logo. That is what was done for the Children’s Miracle Network. The logo provided to us is used all over North America as their symbol. The awards were created to honor various donors each year. This is the second rendition of the logo over the past several years. The more modern version from 2011 represents a more contemporary “balloon”. This project has been in place since 2007. The old logo is a familiar site in stores all over the nation where individuals donate a dollar or more and place their name on a paper balloon that is displayed on the wall of the store after each donation is made. The photo at right shows the “rough drawing” of the first model sculpted by MK Shannon for the Children’s Miracle Network Excellence Awards.

The second photo is of the finished award cast in pewter and mounted on marble.

The third photo (below) shows the Excellence Award, the updated version, cast in pewter and mounted on marble.

The organization decided to “modernize” their logo and needed an award that reflected their new image. Problem? Not with MK Shannon Awards. Once the company provided the new logo it was just a matter of weeks before the new design was sculpted, molded, and cast. The new image was created to their satisfaction and has been used for the past two years with great success.

Joan Beck, Executive Administrative Assistant for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in Salt Lake City, Utah says this about the awards and the individuals who receive them:
“Our Excellence Award is given to employees of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. They are a part of our hospital relations team and we give out this award every quarter. Our team votes for who they think had performed the best over the past quarter. These are some of our most current recipients!”

Here's a little background about Children's Miracle Network and its founders.

A Tale of Two Sister Cities: Shimada, Japan and Zhoushan, China Presented with MK Shannon Sculptures by the City of Richmond, California

Richmond, CA In July of this year, 2013, Lucy Zhou contacted me, MK Shannon, directly on behalf of the Port of Richmond. I was a resident of Point Richmond on the San Francisco Bay for 12 years. I loved it there. Consequently, when Lucy called to ask for my assistance in ordering gifts for an upcoming official trip to the City of Shimada, Japan and the City of Zhoushan, China, I was more than a little excited to take this project. The project included the need to have one distinctive sculpture to present in Japan and a different image to present in China. Each sculpture was to reflect the importance of the cities having become sister cities of the city of Richmond. I immediately recommended three different sculptures from my collection. The piece chosen for the the City of Shimada, Japan is entitled “Partners”(shown below).

Richmond, California's Vice Mayor Courtland Boozé (right) and Council Member Nathaniel Bates (left) presented MK Shannon sculpture to Shimada, Japan's Mayor Kinuyo Soneya in the photo above. Mayor Kinuyo Soneya was recently elected as the first female mayor in the city's history.

The sculpture selected for presentation to the City of Zhoushan, China presented a different request. The City of Richmond, representing the Port of Richmond, wanted to present one large sculpture to the city's mayor and seven identical smaller sculptures to various departments in the city to show appreciation and gratitude from the City of Richmond. Lucy Zhou and I directed the whole project for both countries and obtained approvals from the Richmond Board of Directors and the mayor as the need arose. Lucy is an outstanding woman who serves the Port of Richmond tirelessly. With her assistance I proposed to create a smaller version of the large sculpture entitled “ World Infinity” to be presented to the City of Zhoushan. The smaller versions were given to different department heads within the city of Zhoushan.
A photo of that sculpture being presented to Zhoushan, China's Vice Mayor Lin Jiang by Nat Bates and Courtland Boozé is shown below

Lucy Zhou’s sharp-eyed management of this project allowed me enough time to create a new model, have it cast and plated at the foundry in time for the departure of the Richmond delegation in early October, 2013. One “Partners” was presented to the City of Shimada, Japan and one large “World Infinity” and seven small “World Infinity” sculptures were completed for shipment overseas.

I personally met with Nathaniel Bates, Board Councilman for the City of Richmond (and former mayor) and Lucy Zhou, the Port of Richmond liaison, after their return from their mission to Japan and China.

"Richmond, California's Vice Mayor Courtland Boozé and Council Member Nathaniel Bates presented Shimada, Japan's Mayor Kinuyo Soneya and Zhoushan, China's Vice Mayor Lin Jiang with these beautiful gifts commemorating our long-term sister city relationships. The gifts were received with great enthusiasm and appreciation", said Lucy Zhou.
